Sleep Dentistry in North Fremantle
Stress-Free Dental Care with IV Sedation
Sleep or sedation dentistry involves using sedatives to help patients relax during dental procedures. It can range from mild relaxation to deep sedation, depending on the level of anxiety or fear you experience. The goal is to make dental treatments more comfortable by numbing pain and awareness.
At Superior Smiles, we understand that dental procedures can be highly stressful for some people. Sleep dentistry can offer an excellent solution, whether it’s because of the sound of dental instruments, a traumatic past experience, or a general fear of visiting the dentist. It helps you relax, inducing a state of conscious sedation that allows you to get your treatment done easily. Our sleep dentistry services ensure a stress-free experience for people who may have been putting off dental work because of dental anxiety.

IV Sedation Dentistry in North Fremantle
At our Fremantle Clinic, we provide intravenous sedation to ensure a calm and relaxed experience during your dental treatment. Also referred to as twilight dentistry or conscious sedation, it involves administering sedative medication directly into the bloodstream through a vein. The level of sedation can be adjusted as required, ranging from mild drowsiness to deeper sedation for minimal recollection of the procedure.
How Does IV Sedation Work?
A trained specialist administers IV sedation to ensure your safety and comfort. Before initiation, our dentists will conduct a comprehensive patient assessment to evaluate your medical history and identify contraindications. We will detail the specifics of IV sedation and its potential effects, obtaining a written form of consent before proceeding.
Before your dental procedure, a licensed sedation specialist will insert a fine needle into a vein in your hand or arm, connected to a tube, delivering the sedative directly into your bloodstream. Your vital signs, such as your pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, will be continuously monitored to maintain safety and ensure no adverse reaction. You may feel a bit drowsy after the procedure. However, the effects gradually wear off post-procedure. Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you 12 hours post-IV sedation.
Who Can Get IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation may be suitable for patients who are in good health but struggle with dental anxiety. Other reasons you may need IV sedation include:
- Fear of dental instruments
- Dental phobia or nerves
- Low pain tolerance
- Extensive dental work
Our caring dentists will evaluate your health and assess your needs, helping you decide on the right sedation option. With a focus on minimally invasive treatments with the least amount of stress, pain or nerves, we aim to provide personalised care centred around your needs and peace of mind.

FAQ's
Rather than general anaesthetic, where you are unconscious during treatment, IV sedation will put you into a relaxed, sleep-like state. You will still be able to follow what the dentist asks you to do, but you usually won’t remember much once the procedure is over. IV Sedation needs to be administered by a specially trained professional.
We may recommend IV sedation during your assessment, particularly if you are having major treatment or have a complex case. You can also request it with Dr Gopal and her team during your treatment planning.
Methoxyflurane is an inhaled medication used to reduce pain. At the recommended dose, it can provide relief to patients without producing anaesthesia. The onset of relief occurs quickly after inhalation and leads to a state of deep sedation.
You must not be given Methoxyflurane if you or a family member are suspected of having an allergic reaction to Methoxyflurane or other inhalation anaesthetics. There are other circumstances that will prevent you from being able to take this drug. Please speak with your healthcare professional before undergoing treatment.
