What to do in a dental emergency
When something goes wrong with your teeth, acting quickly can reduce pain and prevent long-term damage. Here’s what to do while you’re getting to us:
Knocked-Out Tooth
- Find the tooth and stay calm.
- Hold it by the crown (not the root) and gently rinse it in milk or saline. Do not scrub it.
- Try to reinsert it into the socket using your other teeth as a guide. If that’s not possible:
- Place it in milk or saline,
- Or tuck it inside your cheek.
- Call us immediately – reaching us within 30-60 minutes gives the best chance of saving it.
Partially Dislodged Tooth
- Rinse gently with warm water.
- Do not wiggle or force the tooth.
- If it’s comfortable to do so, try repositioning it gently.
- Contact us right away to stabilise the tooth and protect it from further trauma.
Severe Toothache
- Try a warm saltwater rinse.
- Use cold compresses or pain relief as needed.
- Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
- See us as soon as possible – toothaches don’t go away on their own and may indicate infection.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
- Collect any broken fragments and store them in milk or your saliva.
- Rinse your mouth and apply gauze if needed.
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Book an emergency appointment – the sooner we treat it, the better.
Lost Filling, Crown or Veneer
- Place sugar-free gum over the exposed area to prevent irritation.
- Store any lost restorations in a container and bring them with you.
- Take pain relief if needed.
- Don’t wait – exposed teeth can quickly become sensitive or infected.
Gum Abscesses or Swelling
- May signal a severe infection.
- Call us immediately for diagnosis and treatment.
- If swelling is severe or affects breathing or swallowing, visit your nearest hospital emergency department.
Injuries to Lips, Gums or Tongue
- Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
- Apply a cold compress to the area.
- Use clean gauze to stop any bleeding.
- Seek urgent help if bleeding doesn’t stop within 15 minutes.
Trapped Object Between Teeth
- Gently use dental floss or an interdental brush – do not use sharp objects.
- If you can’t dislodge it, we’ll remove it safely and gently.
Broken Braces or Wires
- Apply orthodontic wax to any sharp edges.
- Do not attempt to fix or adjust the braces yourself.
- Contact us to arrange a repair appointment.
